Welcome to Book of Mormon Adventures -- a place that I'd like to dedicate a home to a small, but well-loved genre of historical fiction. LDS historical fiction is based on actual events or settings, but can use fictionalized characters or take artistic license to tell a story.
The stories could be about anything that's familiar to a Latter-day Saint audience. This website focuses primarily on the ones that revolve around events, characters and settings from The Book of Mormon.
There are a lot of great books out there that have already been written, but they are hard to find, or few people even know about them! There are also, I'm sure, many aspiring or unknown writers who have written their own stories in the genre. Hopefully authors, amateurs and visitors can all find a small gathering here.
I think Brother Miller describes the genre best in his preface to Lehi's Legacy.
"The work is fiction, or perhaps, enhanced, part-fiction, in that it strongly adheres to the narrative as related or implied in the Book of Mormon text. This treatment was chosen in order to bring to life the real players of the early Book of Mormon story by word-painting them into a living, moving panorama for its readers. Their character, interests, desires, fears, hopes, experiences and faith are revealed, so that the people of our times can come to appreciate that the cast, who act on the stage of the beginning Book of Mormon drama, are indeed genuine, human men and women, much like we are in modern times today. And thereby, bring into being, an increased empathy that can enhance the impact this inspired book has on the faith of its readers."
If you're an amateur or aspiring author, let the world know!
Your stories don't have to be perfect to be posted. Besides, it'll be a great chance to get some feedback, comments, and tips from other authors. Joining mailing lists is a good way to get some good criticism too. Besides, we seem to be a small crowd anyway, and we need all the support we can get. Check out some of the stories/drafts already to read:
Gadianton's Bandit is based on events in Helaman 11, and is the story of a young Lamanited named Gideon who is carried off captive from the city of Zarahemla -- abducted by a band of Gadianton robbers and thieves.
A Division Among the People tells the story of king Noah's final days, as his rash decisions and evil ways tear apart not only a nation, but divide his family against him as well.
